Michael Jackson was famous for his music, but “Earth Song,” was his big, and bold environmental call-to-arms, although often overlooked. The song might have made Michael a kind of Al Gore, way before “An Inconvenient Truth”.
“Earth Song” is indisputably the most popular green-themed tune ever. It remains Jackson's best-selling song overseas, bigger than “Thriller” or “Billie Jean”, and beat out the Beatles' first single in 25 years for the top spot on the British charts. But the song, and its lavish location shots in the video, was barely played, here, in the U.S.
I guest, executives at Epic records didn't think it had much of a chance in the U.S. - the themes of ecological destruction wasn't suited to pop radio, or the song's musical approach using gospel, blues and opera, and was simply considered too offbeat for American audiences?
Wasn't Marvin Gaye similar in raising a world consciousness concerning the war and other in his record “Whats Going On?”
As for me – here's something from one of Michael's songs that will say it all for me.
I'm gonna make a change…
I'm starting with the man in the mirror
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself and
Then make that Change!
