my brownstone and the two along side mine are infested with some strain of weeds. they are all over and everytime I pull one out there's new growth. my partner and I would like to “fix up” the yard so we can actually hang out there this summer. How do we get rid of the weeds for good? How do we stop them from coming back if our neighbors decide not to do anything about their problem?

I use bleach or vinegar mixed with some water on the area to which I want to kill the weeds but I would think nothing else would grow there as well. Others may have better remedies if its sprinkled though-out your backyard and you don't want to kill the grass. Cool

Hello everyone!Laugh

First and foremost the best way to control weeds is to keep them from germinating in the first place, especially America's #1 Least Wanted Weed, the dandelion, buy a book or go to the library and eduacate yourself on weeds; those common in your god-acre and around your immediate neighborhood – your soil type might differ, lighting, drainage, etc. which may just give you a different set of evils – this is where workshops come in, so you can bring soil/weed/evasive plants to discuss the proper way to handle on the property and save time/money.

Secondly, ladybug is on the right track with her remedy; but, if you want to be more on target, guaranteed, use my weed treatment that will last up to four (4) months without question.

My Weed Treatment -

1 cup of anti-bacterial liquid dish soap (lemon)

1 cup of ammonia (lemon scent)

4 tbsp. of instant tea granules

(Follow-Up with the Scott's product below)

Mix all of these together in 20 gallon hose-end sprayer, filling the balance of the sprayer with warm water, overspray entire area, wetting it down well; then apply Scott's – Ortho Weed B Gon Max / ready to use / pull-n-spray application; will not harm the lawn but be sure to follow the label directions exactly.

Thirdly – Crywhew! – GREENB, what's the area like? Are they climbers – wraping around other (trees, fence, shrubs, etc.) or suckers sticking to buildings? Are they flowering or a broadleaf? You used the plural term – is it just one taking over or various ones?

You can begin your 'fix-up' asap by bring samples to Creative Blossoms or sending pictures to their facebook page – from there your problem can be better addressed.

My recommendation, however, if you neighbors don't comply is to 'cook' everything and start new! This can be done modestly and in about 2-3 weeks your god-acre will be completely weed free allowing you to enjoy it for the summer (beginning the 4th of July) and be in complete control of any weeds that may arise by hand by simply prying them out. Once again, contact those at Creative Blossoms for the details on how to make the those weeds history by sizzling them!Wink

The backyard is mostly concrete with a border of dirt and that's where the broad leaf weeds are growing. The yard has not been used in years. We cleared it out last year and ran out of gas… So its just concrete, dirt, and weeds growing along the wooden fence and throughout the dirt.

I will try your remedy and let you know how it goes.

Someone told me to use bleach but I didn't believe it would work without destroying the soil.

Thanks for the info!

…concrete with a border – easy – just cook 'em! ..Cool.sizzle them-2wks

You did not say the condition of the fence (old/new/treated wood/etc) but its a small thing, you have a 'bigger fish to fry' concerning the weeds (pun intended)…you mentioned how you ran out of gas and I commiserate with you…some people find that yard work is hard while others find it easy, even relaxing. I was taught and teach that the total sum is based largely on how you prepare for the yard work ahead.  Keep in mind that you don't live in a desert or somewhere that taking care of your 'yard' involves deciding which color of rocks to buy; and that's a beautiful thing, just commit to the beautification at least a full year and it can give you years beauty in return - even at its worst it won't be a pain in the butt the following year to work.Wink
